Payton Day is not just another player on the court. She possesses a star power that is truly unique, setting her apart from her peers. As a 7th-grade standout at Richards Middle School, she has established herself as a force to be reckoned with in youth basketball. Her skill set is exceptional. She’s not just shifty with the ball, but also possesses the agility and speed to attack the rim confidently. Day’s confidence was a key factor in leading her team to victory in the Eastern Division Tournament, earning them the title of Gwinnett County Public Schools Eastern Division Champions after a thrilling 36-30 win over McConnell.
“Going into the championship game, my mindset is to continue to attack and take my shot if I’m open,” said Day.
Even when McConnell tried their best to contain Day, going as far as double-teaming her, Day’s sportsmanship and team spirit shone through. She plays unselfish basketball, always looking to get her teammates involved and finding ways to contribute to her team, even when the ball isn’t in her hands.
Day’s remarkable ability to read the game is key to her success. It allows her to create scoring opportunities for her teammates while generating offense. Regardless of the defensive scheme she faces, she consistently finds a way to make plays, whether it’s breaking through a tight press, navigating a zone defense, or using her quickness and excellent dribbling skills to outmaneuver her opponents.
Day is a natural athlete, and there’s no denying that with her impressive resume. Last month, she made history when she scored a Gwinnett County Middle School record of 45 points, 12 rebounds, and six assists.
Says Day, “It felt amazing. I never thought I would score 45 points in a game. I just focused on attacking the basket and hitting my shots.”
Day and the Lady Titans are looking for one more win to finish their season as champions in the Gwinnett County Championship on Tuesday, February 11th, at 5:30 pm at Summerour Middle School.
