Langston Hughes is the team to beat, and we’re not just talking about in the city of South Fulton. They’re the team to beat in the state of Georgia.
“Tonight’s win meant a lot to us because we’re trying to reach a national ranking. We want to beat every Georgia team and show we’re the best in Georgia, and tonight, we stamped that. We’re the team to beat. We’re the it team, and everybody wants to beat us, and we know that, so we’re ready for every game,” said Savannah Robinson-Holmes, senior point guard for Langston Hughes.
Robinson is a shifty guard who makes it difficult for opponents to guard her with her quickness, scoring ability, and playmaking skills. She’s a fan favorite with her energetic and competitive style of play. Robinson does everything, every possession, showing everyone what it looks like to leave it all on the floor. Her final year for the Lady Panthers is one she’s standing on business about, and she proved that in their latest matchup against St. Francis.
Monday night, Langston Hughes ended St. Francis’s five-game win streak and handed them their second-season loss. While both teams have great campaigns this season, the results showed why Langston Hughes is in its own lane.
The Lady Panthers play great team ball and have a roster full of athleticism, making it hard for any team to take them down. Langston Hughes has two 2025 McDonald’s All-Americans nominees on their squad, McKayla Taylor and Jocelyn Faison.
Says Jocelyn Faison, “ Tonight’s game is a step closer to proving that we are the best team not only in Georgia but we should be in the top 25.” Faison committed to the University of Georgia last year. Her ability to play multiple positions gives her an edge, but her toughness in the paint, offensively and defensively, is deadly. While she’s a beast on the hardwood, one can’t overlook her positive attitude with her coach and teammates when she hoops, which makes her special.
Having a great season is like putting together a puzzle. All the pieces must fit perfectly, and that’s where Cornelia Ellington comes in. She’s a hustler on both ends of the floor. Her ability to leverage her talents to do exactly as much as her team needs her to do helps create a good balance. Ellington plays confidently and has enough flash to make the crowd go wild. She’s a shooter who dares an opponent to leave her open beyond the arc and double-dares them to think she won’t shoot it in their face. Like her teammates, Ellington knows they have a target on their back with much to prove.
Langston Hughes is ranked first in its region (8-0) and lost only one game this season against Hebron Christian. However, one week later, the team had a rematch, beat Hebron Christian by three points, and hasn’t looked back since.
“We were not prepared, but in the second matchup, our mindset was different. We came into the first game a little cocky we thought we had a one-up; that game taught us to stay humble for the rest of the season, and ever since then, I feel like we’ve been taking off, “said Ellington.
The Lady Panthers have a businesslike attitude, and we’re here to witness the greatness that originated on Hall Road in Fairburn, Georgia.
