Studies show that there is a positive correlation between playing sports and increased confidence among girls.
The stats are true. Undeniably, sports have a positive effect on girls.
Says Juliet Torres, “Playing sports teaches girls how to be strong. I used to be shy but I’ve learned how to speak up for myself.”
Torres, a sixth-grade student at Orlando Gifted Academy was at the YMCA when she saw a group of girls playing volleyball. Watching those girls influenced her to pursue the sport. She was 10 years old when she decided to play volleyball. She hasn’t looked back since.
Trying a new sport for the first time can be intimidating or make girls feel self-conscious. Torres shared her advice to girls who are interested in playing volleyball. Says Torres, “You may not get it on the first try but if you practice and stick to it you will get it.”
While it can be hard to balance being a student-athlete, Torres always focuses on her schoolwork first. She aspires to play volleyball on the collegiate and professional levels. “I would like to play professional volleyball, but I also want to be a lawyer or dentist,” said Torres.
