JOURNEY ARMSTEAD SCORED HER 1,000TH CAREER POINT – LED SAND SPRINGS TO VICTORY

Journey Armstead led Sand Springs to victory over Bishop Kelley Thursday night in the Port City Classic.

Bishop Kelley pounced on the Sandites in the first quarter with a 7-o lead. Sand Springs gained their first lead with less than one minute left in the first quarter.

It was an intense and physical game. But that’s how the standout freshman Sakauri Wilson likes to play. “Our team is really physical,” said Wilson. She racked up 14 points from hustling on both ends of the floor and knocking down shots at the charity stripe.

Sand Springs picked up the pace and applied pressure in the second quarter. They gained their largest lead of 17 points. Their press proved to be too much to handle for Bishop Kelley. Sand Springs led at halftime 28-17.

Going into the third quarter, Armstead had her eye on a milestone. The fierce junior was two points shy of scoring her 1,000th career point as a Sandite. Shortly after the third quarter started, Armstead achieved her goal. “I couldn’t do it without my team,” said Armstead.

After the team celebrated, it was time to get back to business. Bishop Kelley had gained momentum and closed the gap to seven points by the end of the third quarter.

But, thanks to the sister duo, Armstead and Wilson were able to help Sand Springs pull away and finish their first day in the tournament with a 50-42 victory over Bishop Kelley.
