DARRIAN JORDAN believes that basketball builds a girl’s confidence. Says Jordan, “I think that it’s important for girls to participate in sports because it gives them a chance to build themselves up.”
The game means a lot to her. In many ways, basketball serves as an outlet.
“Basketball is my getaway from life when I’m stressed out, ” said Jordan.
Like many student-athletes, Jordan balances academics and athletics. Life as a teenager can be demanding with peer pressure, academic stress, and uncertainty about the future.
As a rising senior at Sand Springs High School, she’s focused on scoring well on the ACT and SAT as well as getting accepted into college.
She looks up to her former teammate, Destiny Johnson. Johnson currently hoops for the University of Tulsa.
Says Jordan, “Destiny inspires me because she gives her all on and off of the court. Seeing her success motivates me and keeps me humble.”
Jordan started hooping at a young age. Before picking up a basketball she played softball, but there was something about basketball that she loved.
“I love going to the gym. Basketball is a contact sport and that’s one of the reasons that I fell in love with the game.”
Her motto — “Girls can do what boys can do.”
