BALLER MENTALITY

JA’MEE ASBERRY isn’t your average hooper.  Her dedication to being the best easily separates her from anyone who thought they were competition.

To understand the sustained excellence of Asberry, you must grasp what lies at the heart of her success. It’s the same thing that’s at the root of all great players: killer instinct.

She has a true baller mentality and an incredible basketball IQ.

As I watch her push through her workout with high intensity and passion, I immediately know that she’s playing for something bigger than herself.

Says Asberry, “I go hard on the court for my two younger sisters.”

Asberry’s mother passed away a few years ago, but every time she laces up her sneakers to step on the hardwood she’s playing for her mother and her two younger sisters.

“I feel bad that they lost their mom at a young age so I try to bring positivity to my sister’s lives,” said Asberry.

Her journey has consisted of many obstacles, however, her remarkable resilience and toughness are unparalleled.

Asberry has been in the gym working relentlessly on improving her game — specifically her handles. “As a point guard, I want to be comfortable doing fancy moves again,” said Asberry.

At the same time, she’s also working on building authentic relationships with her peers and teammates. Her belief is that a strong bond and relationship with her teammates will be beneficial for a successful season.

She’s also focusing on becoming a better defender and taking more pride in her defense. Her goal is to be a top defender and scorer for Oklahoma State Cowgirls basketball team this upcoming season.

“Say’s Asberry, ” It’s important to stay in the gym and work on your mental. The mental aspect is just as important as the physical. Being mentally ready will help you in the long run,” said Asberry.
